What is irrigation backflow/cross connection? Backflow/cross connection testing is a process that checks the backflow device on your irrigation system. This device prevents contaminated water from your lawn (which could have chemicals or fertilizers) from getting into the municipal water supply and is required to be tested every three years.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, or EGLE, requires water utilities to have comprehensive cross connection control programs for the elimination and prevention of all cross connections. This is defined in Part 14 of the Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act. Additionally, EGLE has published a Cross Connection Rules Manual which more fully explains cross connection programs. Click here to learn more about the Cross Connection Program.

Starting this year (through 2026), the Township is resurveying all water customers to see if new irrigation systems have been installed. If you have received a letter, please have your backflow device tested or return the form indicating that you do not have an irrigation system or that the irrigation system is connected to a well. Having this information ensures that our municipal water supply remains safe.

If you didn't receive a letter, check the testing schedule map to see when your area is due for testing within the 3-year cycle. You'll receive a letter in the spring in a future year.

What do you need to do after receiving the backflow/cross connection letter?

STEP 1:  Determine your situation:
  • Do you have an irrigation system connected to municipal water? If yes, proceed to step 2.
  • Don't have an irrigation system (or meet one of the following conditions below)? Complete and return the "Residential Irrigation System Information" side of the orange form you received.
    • Your residence does not have an underground lawn irrigation system
    • Your underground lawn irrigation system is supplied by a well
    • Your underground lawn irrigation system is un-operational

STEP 2: If you have an irrigation system connected to municipal water, you MUST get it tested.

 Follow these steps:

Locate a State Approved Certified Backflow Tester: Plainfield Township Water Department does not conduct testing, nor can they recommend a certified tester. Certified testers can be found with most plumbers and lawn irrigation companies.

TIP: Over the past years, many residents have reported that grouping testing together with neighbors has provided discounted pricing. Reach out to your neighbors and group together!

Schedule Your Appointment: Schedule a date with the tester you have chosen to have your backflow prevention assembly(s) tested prior to the required due date on your notice.

Fill in your name/phone number/address on the orange testing form that you received in the mail. Present the form to your tester and the tester will complete the rest of the form.

Submit Your Test Results: Please have a copy of your test results provided to the Township. Your results can be sent via email, postal service, or you may drop them off at Township Hall or the Water Department.

Form returns and questions should be directed to:

NOTE: Compliance can only be achieved if the test results are passing or your tester/plumber indicates the supply has been disconnected and the backflow assembly(s) have been removed. You will continue to receive notification if the results equal failure and/or repairs are necessary.
