Spring into Action: Watershed-Friendly Tips from LGROW

As the flowers start to bloom, it's time for spring cleaning – both inside your home and in the yard! The Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds (LGROW) wants to remind everyone how these spring activities can impact the health of our watershed. Here are a few simple ways to care for your property and protect our waterways this spring:

  • Be Fertilizer Savvy: Lush green lawns are appealing, but over-fertilizing can send excess nutrients into our waterways. These nutrients contribute to algae blooms and other water quality problems. Before fertilizing, get your soil tested to determine exactly what is needed. Follow application instructions carefully and always choose slow-release fertilizers.
  • Rethink Your Yard Waste: Don't blow grass clippings and leaves into the street. They end up in storm drains, polluting our rivers. Instead, compost yard waste or use it as a natural mulch in garden beds.
  • Wash Your Car Wisely: Take your car to a commercial car wash where wastewater is treated, or wash it over the lawn to allow the soil to filter the soapy water. Minimize the use of harsh detergents.
  • Pick Up After Your Pets: Pet waste contains bacteria that can harm water quality and make people sick. Always bag it up and dispose of it properly.
  • Plant Natives: Native plants are adapted to our local climate, requiring less water and fertilizer. Their deep roots also help prevent soil erosion and filter stormwater runoff. Support local nurseries and choose a variety of native wildflowers and grasses to attract pollinators too!
  • Inspect Your Septic System: If you have a septic system, regular inspections and maintenance are key. A malfunctioning system can send harmful pollutants directly into groundwater and streams.
