Smoke Alarms: Your Home's Lifesaving Signal

The Plainfield Township Fire Department wants to emphasize the vital role smoke alarms play in keeping our community safe. These simple devices offer an early warning system in the event of a fire.

Check out these tips from The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) below to keep your family and property safe:

Smoke Alarm Tips

  • Installation: Every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on all levels of your home (basement included) should have a smoke alarm.
  • Interconnection: For maximum safety, consider interconnected smoke alarms. A single alarm triggers all connected alarms, providing the fastest alert.
  • Testing: Conduct monthly tests to ensure your alarms are operational.
  • Planning: A fire escape plan is critical. Know what to do if an alarm sounds, and the value a closed door has in slowing fire spread.

Understanding the Alarms

  • Smoke Alarm: Three continuous, loud beeps indicate FIRE! Evacuate immediately, call 9-1-1, and do not re-enter the building.
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm: Four loud beeps signal a CO emergency. Go outside, call 9-1-1, and stay outside until cleared by emergency personnel.
  • Chirping: A chirp every 30-60 seconds means the battery is low. Replace it promptly. Continuous chirping with a new battery indicates the alarm itself needs replacement.

 Protection for Everyone
Residents with sensory or physical disabilities should consider these safety tips:

  • Specialized Alarms: Bedside devices can connect to existing alarms and provide alerts through vibration or flashing lights.
  • Low-Frequency Alarms: Better for those with hearing loss.
  • Be Prepared: Keep essential items like glasses, mobility aids, and your phone within easy reach of your bed.
