FEMA letter approving the Plainfield Floodplain Mitigation Plan (.pdf)

Plainfield Charter Township is happy to announce that we have received final approval of our Floodplain Mitigation Plan from the State of Michigan and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This plan was the result of over a year of work by the Community Development Department and a committee drawn from public safety agencies, Kent County Road Commission, State of Michigan DEQ and local residents of the floodplain.

You can download the Plan below, or stop by the Township offices for a copy.

Starting this year (2008), the Township will undertake several projects as outlined in the Plan to improve Public Safety and Public Awareness through education, use of the Master Plan and zoning regulations, mitigation activities, and increased safety measures. The long term objectives will be to control development, promote education and reduce insurance costs in the flood-prone areas.

Over the next year, the Community Development Department will be applying for grants and pursuing actions that will allow the Township to:

  • Submit an application for a Mitigation Grant to purchase 3 high risk properties on a voluntary basis near to or adjacent to the Grand Isle Golf Course (application submitted).
  • Request additional signage informing the general public that they are entering flood prone areas.
  • Complete a floodplain inventory that includes main floor elevations of all at-risk structures.
  • Request and install a flood gage at the Jupiter Bridge to assist residents and the weather forecasters in estimating and predicting flooding.
  • Consider appliying for grants to assist residents in elevating and floodproofing their homes.
  • Submit a CRS (Community Rating System) application for consideration by FEMA to receive discounted flood insurance premiums for residents of Plainfield Township.
  • Provide continuing education for residents and the establishment of a 3 to 5 member Floodplain Committee comprised primarily of residents living in the floodplain.

If you have any questions, please contact Peter Elam in the Community Development Department, or call Peter at (616) 726-8899.
